A introduction by Moz Greenshields… to the Derby Fabians
Sunday, 02 May 2010 22:52

We often talk about the “Thatcher generation” meaning those people whose growing up formative years took place during those dark years of consistent and vicious attacks on working people.

But the Thatcher years had more effects than scarring many people and distorting a generation’s view of what is right and wrong and how the world works and could work.

Those years saw the establishment of a neoliberal consensus, though we didn’t call it that at the time. They saw Thatcher’s “TINA” mantra – “There Is No Alternative” – firmly established in the minds of many politicians far beyond the Conservative Party.

Dear Colleagues,

DOWNLOAD WORD FILE

The People’s Charter For Change is a six point “manifesto” to deliver a fairer Britain. We’ve included a copy for you to read, and we’d be very interested to know your views.

But it’s not a “manifesto” in the normal use of the word. The People’s Charter is NOT a political party. It has supporters in many different parties, and in none… it is a movement, and a programme to get people active on its issues in all sorts of ways, and in all different contexts.

Dear Sir,

DOWNLOAD WORD FILE

We believe that there need to be real policies for change put before the British people.

Unemployment is growing. We are threatened with pay cuts, and attacks on pensions. People are losing their houses and homes. Public services are again to suffer massive cuts. Child and family poverty are on the increase. Racist and fascist organisations are being given credence and publicity. Environmental problems are growing. Britain is sending its young people to fight in unjust wars.

Building support for the Charter in your area

The Charter is supported by a huge range of people and organisations. Community organisations, unions, pensioners, young people, anti racists, anti war protesters, people campaigning to save their public services, environmentalists, people from different political parties, and thousands of people who aren’t in anything all support the Charter. It belongs to all of us.

Anyone can set up a local Charter group in their area, as long as it supports the 6 points in the Charter, and is completely open to anyone who wants to support them. If you want to set up a local Charter group, and want to talk to someone about how to go about this, contact us and Other: +447813390063.

Charter groups in many areas are holding rally’s, running street stalls, lobbying council meetings, supporting and setting up local campaigns against cuts and privatisation, and getting the Charter into the local media.

Charter groups are producing leaflets, petitions, press releases, posters, stickers and badges for their area. Campaigning material can be downloaded from here. An updated national leaflet is being produced, and will be ready within the next couple of weeks.

The national website is being developed, and now has a new space for Supporters Thoughts, as well as space for comments and news about local events.

Many local Charter groups have their own dedicated email. If you are setting up a group and want to dedicated email address that can be put up on the website, get in touch.

If you are organising around the Charter in your area, please get in touch if you need any help, and keep on sending in reports, photos and materials others can use our email.

The People’s Charter is supported by organisations as well as individuals. Whatever organisation you are in, let us know if it supports the Charter and we will put it on the website.

Community and tenant activists support the Charter. Leading community organisations, like Southall Black Sisters, support the Charter. If you are part of a community group or a tenants group, ask them to sign up!

The Charter has already gained the support of most of the main national unions, as well as thousands of union activists, and was adopted by the 2009 TUC Congress.  As well as being signed up to the Charter nationally, many trade union branches, regions and trades council’s are supporting local Charter activity in their area.

If your organisation or union hasn’t yet signed up to the Charter, why not do what others are doing and put a resolution proposing that it does so? See here for model resolution.
